Printer issues after Tiger update

Published by ksanders at 3:57 pm under Main Page

Night before last, I used System Update to pull down and install Tiger 10.4.1. No problems, but I did not need to print again until last night.

I have a D-Link DP-300U print server to which I have attached an HP LaserJet 5L and an Epson Stylus Photo 820. When I first got my Mac on May 11th and setup the printers, I was able to print with no problems, although I have to use the HP 4L Gimp-Print driver for the LaserJet.

When I got home last night and needed to print a document, I found that the print queue was just sitting there saying that the IP for the HP5L queue was busy and it would try again in a few seconds. This happened a few times before I started investigating.

I tried several different things to get it to work. I reset the print server and removed all printers and added them again in Tiger. Unfortunately, I did not write down all the steps that I took, so I am not exactly sure what I did that actually got it working again.

Nonetheless, the update went smooth except for this one issue that I know about.

    dear Kerry,
I've the same configuration of your mini-lan: mac mini with Tiger, DP-300U, and Laserjet 5L. I'm able to print via AppleTalk method even if there are some problems of garbage printing. It seems that HP printer assumes that binary data received over AppleTalk connection are encoded in Postscript Binary format. I have no idea how to solve this problem, but I found this interesting link: http://www.macwindows.com/
If I find good news I'll post you immediatly. Good luck

I do not have AppleTalk even turned on anymore. I could not get it to work with my HP5L printer. What I ended up doing was setting it up as an IP printer. The IP address is that of the DP-300U. In the settings of the DP-300U on its web setup page, I set the name of the queue for the HP5L to just that… HP5L. In the printer setup on the Mac, I used that queue name and used HP LaserJet 5 Series Gimp 2 as the printer driver. It works for me. Let me know if I can be of any further help.

Hello, I just upgraded to Tiger and I found your article. I am having the same problem of trying to setup my printer to the HP Laserjet 5L. I tried following your suggestion with no luck. I set up an IP printer with the IP address of my SMC router with HP5L as the queue name…but nothing prints. However, when I look at the setup, it has the queue name as “_192_168_2_1″ So it changed it or something…do you have any other suggestions? Thanks…jahsboy

I actually am no longer using the HP 5L. I never could get it to work continuously. I ended up getting a Brother HL-2070N and hooked it directly to my network router via ethernet.
I'm sorry that I am unable to help you with this. I believe the HP5L and the Mac are just not meant to be. :(
