One step away?

Published by ksanders under Hardware, Apple, Main Page

Could we be one step away to new Apple hardware containing Intel processors? MacWorld starts next Monday, January 9th. It is quite possible that on that date, Steve Jobs will talk about new Apple computers based on the new processors that Intel debuted at CES today.
Intel announced their new Centrino Duo mobile technology. It should increase battery life and improve performance on wireless laptops. Along with this, Intel introduced its Core Duo processor. It is a dual core CPU that supports the Centrino Duo technology.

Will Apple do away with FireWire?

Published by ksanders under Hardware, Apple, Main Page

A lot of discussions about Apple hardware as of last has focused on whether or not Apple would drop FireWire ports from their upcoming laptop lines. Many believe that they will and, of course, many believe that Apple will not drop FireWire.

I am not sure if Apple will drop FireWire or not. I think it would not be a wise move to drop it, because all of the current consumer, prosumer, and high-end video equipment use FireWire connectivity in one form or another.

Chris Seibold has written a very interesting article over at Apple Matters about this very subject. Check it out.

Apple getting rid of Firewire?

Published by ksanders under Hardware, Apple, Main Page

It appears that Apple is doing away with Firewire. It is rumored that the next version of the iBook will now have any Firewire ports. It is also rumored that the next Powerbook will have only one single Firewire 800 port with the Firewire 400 ports disappearing completely.

I hope this is not the case. In the real world, Firewire is faster than USB2 for sustained throughput. On top of that, when is the last time that you plugged your digital video camera into your computer using USB?

Apple's music event

Published by ksanders under Hardware, iPod, Apple, Main Page

Engadget is reporting that Apple has announced a new line of the iMac which is slightly flatter than the current line. They have also released a new iPod with video capabilities. It is still music first, but the new iPod is smaller than the current 60 gig model and will feature a 2.5-inch display, QVGA resolution (320 x 240), and will MPEG-4 h.264 (natch), and presumably Quicktime.

Also announced, and demonstrated today, is iTunes 6.0 only a month after iTunes 5.0 was released. The biggest difference? Video download capabilities. Videos will be made available through iTunes for $1.99 each.

If you are very fond of the single button mice that Apple has been producing all these years, you will get a real kick out of the latest FoxTrot comic issue.

Apple releases a two button mouse

Published by ksanders under Hardware, Apple, Main Page

Apple today released their version of the two button mouse named Mighty Mouse
This new mouse still looks like it only has one button, but it has
touch sensitive technology under the smooth shell that senses where you
are clicking and what your intentions are for clicking.  The mouse
also has two side buttons that are useable and can be programmed, so
this mouse really has four buttons.

A nice feature of the mouse is the 360 degree scroll ball.  You can smoothly scroll the screen in all directions.

Apple has gone a long way with this mouse to appease those who want to
keep the Apple hardware theme, yet also prefer a two button mouse to
the original single button mouse.

use this display.

Enhanced Mac Mini and faster iBooks today

Published by ksanders under Hardware, Apple, Main Page

Apple today announced enhanced Mac Mini computers with built-in wireless and DVD burning.  Apple also announced faster iBook notebook computers with scrolling trackpad.

Now that I have the Power Mac, whenever I go on a vacation trip I miss
the Mac.  I have a laptop, but it is Wintel based.  I would
love to get an Apple notebook.  When I mentioned it to my better
half last night, she did not exactly give me the go-ahead on that
purchase decision.
