Aside from an awesome user interface and a great underlying architecture, Apple built OS X with security in mind. As part of that central security theme, OS X has been designed using three key isolation features:System IsolationUser IsolationMemory and Application Isolation.

I had a situation tonight where Mail was crashing on my Power Mac when I tried to launch it and check my mail. I have several email accounts setup and I could see that it was coming up and trying to show the last message that I was viewing in my Gmail account before I closed it previously. Just afterwards, it would crash.
After several times of trying to launch Mail and clicking on a different mailbox to no avail, I started poking around in my ~/Library to see if I could find anything. I came across ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist.
At the top of the preferences file is a string named AccountInfoLastSelectedAccountId. I soon discovered that the mailbox ID that this was pointing to matched the uniqueid for my Gmail account under MailAccounts. So, I copied the uniqueid string from my primary mailbox to the AccountInfoLastSelectedAccountId field. I saved the preferences file and relaunched Mail.
Unfortunately, my happiness turned to disappointment not too long afterward, because it died again just as it had been doing. So, I went back to the pref file for Mail and poked around some more. This time, I came across an array field named SelectedMailboxes which is in the first dictionary under the ActiveViewers array field.
I noticed that the string value for the first selected mailbox pointed to my Gmail account. This time, I copied the mailbox account string for my primary mailbox and replaced this string in the SelectedMailboxes section.
I saved the preferences file, relaunched Mail, and to my joy, it is working without crashing again.
Just a note, please make a backup of a .plist file before editing it. This way, if you make a mistake, you will have the original copy to revert back to.
Hopefully this tip will help someone in the future who might have this same problem.

My wife and I got new phones Monday. We both opted for the Motorola Razr V3 in black. Of course, being a tech geek, my first thoughts when I got home were to see how long it would take to get it working over Bluetooth with my Mac.
Not a problem. After pairing the phone and the machine, I was able to pull up the Bluetooth File Exchange utility and I was quickly transferring some ring tones that I had made and a couple of photos. I then turned to iSync to see how well it would sync my contacts and calendars. This is where my depression kicked in.
iSync would not recognize the phone via Bluetooth. I did a lot of Google searching and forum reading only to find that this was the common theme with many people using this phone. I was able to sync via USB with no problems, but this really wasn't what I was after.
One weird thing that I had noticed when pairing the phone to the machine with Tiger 10.4.1 was that the operating system would not recognize the Razr as a mobile phone. I had to choose “Any Device” when setting it up.
Tiger 10.4.2 to the rescue! After installing the new Tiger update tonight, I figured I would give the phone another go. I was not expecting much, because I had installed the iSync 2.1 update earlier in the day with no change in the way that the phone was seen by the computer. After installing the Tiger update, I removed the phone from the known device list and tried to set it up again. What do you know… this time, the operating system saw the Razr as a mobile phone.
After getting more options during the setup than I had yesterday, I turned to iSync to see what would happen. I brought up iSync and removed the Razr entry that I had already created. I chose to add a device and when iSync did its scan, it saw the Razr via Bluetooth. I chose to add the device, checked the settings, and clicked the button to sync. I was so happy when all of my contacts and calendar information came across.
